My New Favorite Plum

Actually, I'm not sure I had a favorite before. I preferred red to black, but the grocery store never described them in any more detail, much less named them. But at the farmer's market everything's got a name, and this beauty is called Elephant Heart. Sweet, tangy, and unbelievably juicy, with gorgeous red flesh. I got three in a basket of mixed plums, but you can bet I'm going to buy a whole basket of them next week!

Hi Cathy,

The plum looks incredibly juicy and can you believe I've never eaten a red plum before?

That does look like an awful nice plum!! I seem to prefer red over black as well, although I was just discussing this with a coworker who prefers black to red. It seems like they must make prunes with the black plums...wonder what it'd be like to have a red prune? (I just bought a food dehydrator at a garage sale...does this sound like an experiment to you?)

Hi Reid - oh my goodness! Actually, most red plums that I've eaten before were yellow inside. The color of this one is really amazing. What kind of plums have you eaten?

Hi Alice - I'm not sure my preference for red over black was compeletely rational. I think I only tried the black ones once and they were overripe. Was just reading up on prune plums (the ones used for drying) and found this interesting. Your dehydrator sounds like lots of fun! When I was a kid my sister, brothers and I all chipped in to buy one for our parents, but I only recall them using it once! I think they didn't like that it run for so long (too much electricity - just like the rock tumbler!).

Hi Cathy,

I think the only ones that I've eaten were black.

Yum....LOVE plums! It's just incredible at the amount of variety---everything from red, black, sugar, and whatever else. Like you said, the farmer's market has a name for everything!

Hi Rowena! I'm learning how true that is (the incredible variety you spoke of). I hadn't paid much attention to the plums before, but I tried several new ones this year.

Hi Tanvi! I hope you are able to find them - they are so good. I didn't get a chance to go to the farmers market this weekend, so looks like I'll have to go without this week!
